The Coffin Shop
Sounds like a new hip bar, doesn’t it? On our first night in Berlin we took a wander through the streets and passed this place, we had to stop and take a look, it was a lit up like it was a trendy furniture shop only it sold coffins, both traditional wooden ones and others that looked like picnic baskets. On top of the coffins were arrayed some bizarre ornaments including a neon sign that exclaimed in pink letters “KARMA”
Templehof
Before the wall came down, Berlin was an island in a Soviet sea and the main way in or out was by plane. Home to the Berlin Airlift in 1948 where planes were landing every 90 seconds delivering much needed food to the besieged residents of West Berlin, Templehof is the unsung hero of the Cold War Berlin. Be prepared for bewildered expressions on any local you tell about your visit there.
Alexanderplatz and The World Famous World Time Clock
Everybody knows about Alexanderplatz, it’s famous, or so I was told by our guide. It was once the heart of East Berlin just like somewhere I never heard of was the heart of West Berlin but what’s even more famous is the World Famous World Time Clock, surely you’ve heard of it?
The East Wall Gallery
Formerly the Berlin Wall, this is a 1.3km length of the wall that was saved from the wrecking ball and converted into an outdoor public gallery by getting well-known artists to each paint a section of the wall. Since then some local and visiting “artists” have added their own contributions in the form of graffiti….
